Michael Jackson's family plans tribute concert, but some object
KATHERINE JACKSON

July 25, 2011|By Alan Duke, CNN

Katherine Jackson has announced "Michael Forever The Tribute Concert."
Michael Jackson's mother and four of his siblings announced Monday a tribute concert for the late pop singer to be held in Wales in October, but the lineup for talent is still a secret.

Brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie, sister La Toya and family matriarch Katherine Jackson attended the "Michael Forever The Tribute Concert" announcement at the Beverly Hills Hotel on Monday morning.

But the announcement exposed a major rift among members of the Jackson family, especially with Jackson brothers Jermaine and Randy, who did not attend the news conference. They objected to the show because it's scheduled to happen during the criminal trial of the doctor accused in Michael Jackson's death.

Michael Jackson Tribute: Brothers Disagree With Concert's October Date

Michael Jackson’s mother and some of his siblings have announced that a tribute concert for the late pop start will be held in October, but other family members are opposed to the show’s timing because it overlaps with Jackson’s manslaughter trial.

Katherine Jackson, joined by Tito, Jackie, Marlon, and LaToya, said her son’s tribute concert would be "fit for a king" at a press conference Monday in Beverly Hills.

Promoters of the tribute concert, Global Live Events, joined the Jackson family to announce that the concert will be held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales on October 8. The timing is to mark the 40th anniversary of the start of Jackson’s solo career, according to Global Live Events’ Chris Hunt.

Absent from the press conference were other notable Jacksons: Jermaine, Randy, Janet, and family patriarch Joe Jackson.

Just hours after yesterday’s press conference announcing the event, Randy and Jermaine issued a statement slamming the “ill timing” of the event, which will coincide with their late brother’s manslaughter trial set to start September 8. Opening arguments are expected to be late in the month, and the trial will likely go on for weeks.

“While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death,” the Jackson brothers said.

The brothers stressed that they are not against a tribute concert for Michael. The pair attempted to orchestrate a tribute concert of their own for their late brother in 2009, but plans fell apart when sought-out performers were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts.

“There will come a time and place for an amazing and deserving tribute to Michael,” they said in their statement Monday. “But we feel that the most important tribute we can give to our brother at this time is to seek justice in his name.”

Michael’s mother and siblings had indicated previously that they would attend all the proceedings, according to the Associated Press. However, Katherine Jackson said at Monday’s press conference, “I will be there along with as many members of my family that can make it.”

The concert is entitled “Michael Forever: the Tribute Concert” and will feature “a host of top artists and will not be less than four hours long,” according to Hunt. Concert organizers have not yet publicly revealed who will be among the "host of top artists" at Jackson's tribute concert.

"When I was told some of the names of the artists performing, I knew it would be fit for a king,” said Michael Jackson's mother. “If my son was here today he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive.”

Tickets for the concert at the Millennium Stadium, which seats about 75,000 guests, will go on sale online on August 4. Concert proceeds will go to several charities.

Jackson died on June 25, just days before a series of comeback concerts at London’s O2 stadium. The pop star, whose career was marred by accusations of child molestation, was 50. He left behind three children--Prince, Paris, and Blanket.

Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the singer’s death.

Prosecutors say Murray gave the world-renowned king of pop, whom he was treating for insomnia, a deadly dose of the anesthetic propofol in his Los Angeles home days leading up to the concerts.

Meanwhile, Murray’s attorneys are expected to argue that Jackson gave himself a lethal dose of the anesthetic while the doctor was out of his presence.

MJ TRIBUTE CONCERT
Gene Simmons to Perform
Despite Calling MJ a Pedophile

Pretty ironic -- Gene Simmons, who called Michael Jackson a hard-core pedophile, will perform at the MJ Tribute Concert.

Katherine Jackson was on CNN this AM, talking about the concert, when promoters revealed that KISS would be performing.

Yet Gene Simmons went on record last year -- mind you, a year after MJ died -- saying, "There is no question in my mind he molested those kids. Not a doubt."

Simmons went on to say, "The only sexual references ever made about Michael Jackson that were made by anyone, anywhere around the world, have always been made by kids, and specifically males usually 10 to 14 years of age; never females, that age or older, and never grown men."

Hate the man. Love the music.

Gene Simmons comments about Michael Jackson

I expect nothing less from The God of Thunder!

Word is that KISS rocker Gene Simmons has been pressed for comments on the passing of Michael Jackson, but had remained silent since the King of Pop’s death this past Thursday.

Mr. Simmons evidently finally released a statement late on Sunday afternoon, via his Facebook page.

“[I've] gotten a lot of questions from media and from quite a lot of you [regarding] Michael Jackson.

“I have refused all media requests for interviews. There are enough people in the industry being quoted. Some altruistically, some for media coverage.

“Either way… When I was going out with Diana Ross in the early ’80s, I met Michael a few times through her. We spent social time together. Found him to be gentle, charming… obviously very talented. And that was that.

“The Michael of later years is someone I didn’t recognize… nor like very much.

“When there are children involved… when there are allegations (many) of child molestation… when there are admissions of inviting countless young boys to spend weekends and sometimes Michael’s bed with them (Michael’s quote), clothed or unclothed… makes no difference… when there are payoffs to the children making the accusations in the $20,000,000 range ($20 million dollars!!! — as reported by media) ….There’s more than doubt in my mind.

“This doesn’t take into consideration Michael’s children… none of whom are biologically his. All three of whom have had a ‘strange’ upbringing. But then we don’t know much, except a ‘father’ who thought nothing of dangling his young child over the balcony (head covered in a towel), so his fans could get a thrill.

“So what’s my comment regarding Michael’s passing? I hope he finds peace. I wish his family and friends all the best in these very sad times.

“But as regards media coverage: celebs can always get media coverage.

“But what about the children who spent nights with Michael in his bed? (He has admitted on camera he has done it many times, and would continue to do it.) They need a voice. And they should have a chance to have their say. With lie detectors attached. Maybe then, away from rich celebrities, tricky lawyers and L.A. court systems that can’t seem to convict anyone…. maybe then, we’ll find out the truth about child molestation charges leveled at Michael Jackson from children (that’s plural, not singular).

“My comment? I recognize and respect his talent, but the rest is very tainted. And I want to hear the truth, once and for all.”

Gene Simmons: calling it like it is.

MICHAEL JACKSON ESTATE
Something Stinks Over
the MJ Tribute Concert

The honchos in charge of the Michael Jackson Estate are threatening the people behind the Michael Jackson Tribute concert, claiming the promoters have sullied Michael's name and are possibly even ripping off the Estate.

Howard Weitzman, lawyer for the Estate, fired off a letter to promoters of the concert -- set for October 8 in Wales -- expressing displeasure that one of the bands that will be performing is KISS, whose guitarist, Gene Simmons, publicly accused MJ of being a hard-core child molester. Weitzman wrote in his letter, "It was extraordinarily embarrassing when no sooner than you announced this 'news' that he would participate in your concert that TMZ posted an item noting that Mr. Simmons called Michael Jackson -- the man you are purportedly honoring -- a child molester..."

Weitzman also questions where all the proceeds for the concert will be going. We're told Joe Jackson and Leonard Rowe are behind the concert, and they've always been quick to cash in on MJ's name.

And Weitzman suggests promoters may be running afoul of the law by using "intellectual property that is controlled by the Estate" -- which includes MJ images and his songs.

MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE CONCERT
We're Killing KISS
From the Roster

The promoters of the Michael Jackson Tribute Concert have heard fans loud and clear -- Gene Simmons, who has accused Michael of being a pedophile, and his band KISS, have been dropped from the roster.

There was a flurry of criticism after TMZ posted a story ... that Gene said last year, "There is no question in my mind he molested those kids. Not a doubt."

The promoters tell TMZ, "We have listened to Michael's fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons. Under the circumstances we fully agree that even though KISS is a band Michael admired we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert."

The Estate had fired off a letter to the promoters yesterday, expressing their displeasure over KISS performing at the concert.

Michael Jackson Estate Threatens Legal Action Over Tribute Concert
'Michael Forever' concert rescinds invitation for Kiss to perform following complaints from estate and fans.

Several weeks after announcing their intention to celebrate the life of Michael Jackson with an all-star concert called "Michael Jackson Forever," the initial lineup for the October 8 show at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales was revealed last week.

According to promoters, the Michael Forever show is slated to feature such stars as Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Motown legend Smokey Robinson, in addition to less globally popular talents, including Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Leona Lewis, JLS, Craig David, Alien Ant Farm and a pair of Jackson-related groups, 3T and the Jackson Brothers.

The one thing the event does not have, however, is the approval of Jackson's powerful estate, which had kept silent about the show put together by parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson, along with siblings Jackie, Tito, Marlon, LaToya and Rebbie. Brothers Jermaine and Randy have not been involved in the plans and have publicly objected to the event because it falls in the middle of the involuntary manslaughter trial of Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray.

On Tuesday (August 16) a spokesperson for the estate — which has handled all of Jackson's affairs since his 2009 death — confirmed that estate lawyer Howard Weitzman sent a letter to concert organizers last week raising some pointed questions about the show.

"I represent the Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson. As the legal caretakers of Michael's intellectual property, we believe it is our duty to contact you directly regarding the growing number of questions that have been addressed to the Estate, as well as multiple concerns that have emerged in recent days," reads the letter.

After reminding organizers that the estate is the only entity that can sign off on the use of Jackson's image or his intellectual property — the concert's website is careful not to feature any images of the singer or samples of his music — the letter said the estate was "especially disappointed" by the announcement on Monday that greasepaint rockers Kiss have been added to the bill.

Specifically, the beef was that outspoken Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has made a number of disparaging comments about Jackson in the past. "It was extraordinarily embarrassing when no sooner had you announced this 'news' that [Simmons] would participate in your concert that TMZ posted an item noting that Mr. Simmons called Michael Jackson ... a child molester, notwithstanding the fact that Michael was acquitted by a jury," read the letter.

Jackson fansite MJ4Justice was flooded with negative comments about the addition of Kiss, announced on Monday by Katherine Jackson on CNN, and has called for a boycott of the show. The concert's Facebook page has also been inundated with concerns over the booking of Kiss.

And the complaints worked. On Tuesday, the concert's promoter, Global Live Events, canceled Kiss' "invitation" to appear in the show. "We have listened to Michael's fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons," CEO Chris Hunt said in a statement. "Under the circumstances we fully agree that even though Kiss is a band Michael admired we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert. We offer our sincerest apologies to Mrs. Jackson and the family for this oversight — our primary concern must be to do justice to Michael's memory, and to put on a tribute that the family and the fans will find suitable and fit for a King, our King of Pop."

The estate also expressed concerns about the promotion of the concert as a charity event, noting that it is using Jackson's "good name" to promote contributions, when the charitable element of the show is voluntary. "It appears from your interviews and from your website that none of the (approximately $90-$390) per person ticket price is committed to charitable causes," the letter states. The estate asked for clarity on to whom the charitable contributions are going , as well as an explanation of the small type clause that says that refunds will not be offered if "50% or more of the number of contracted artists attend and perform."

A spokesperson for the concert had not returned requests for comment about the donations at press time. Tickets are being distributed in lottery fashion, with fans asked to register for the chance to buy them in order to, "avoid the usual frantic rush and confusion when tickets for big events go on sale," according to the concert's website.

"Michael Jackson always made sure his fans were treated to concert experiences so spectacular that they would remember the evening for the rest of their lives," lawyer Weitzman concluded. "He always treated his fans with the utmost respect. In light of the questions raised above and the confusion surrounding this 'event,' we are extremely concerned about Michael's legacy, his fans and the public-at-large." The letter asks promoter Global Live to address those concerns and those of the singer's fans as soon as possible.

KISS booted from Jackson tribute amid fan uproar
By Alan Duke, CNN

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
NEW: "We have listened to Michael's fans," the promoter says
KISS leader Gene Simmons made negative remarks about Michael Jackson after his death
Tribute organizers say they were unaware of the comments
Several fan sites were calling for a boycott of the October 8 concert
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Promoters yanked the rock band KISS from the Michael Jackson tribute show Tuesday after fans called their attention to negative remarks KISS leader Gene Simmons made about the pop star in the weeks after his death.
The reversals came a day after Katherine Jackson appeared live on CNN to announce the addition of KISS to the lineup for "Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert," scheduled for October 8 in Cardiff, Wales.
"We have listened to Michael's fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons," Global Live Events CEO Chris Hunt told CNN Tuesday.
Fan clubs appeared in open revolt against the tribute show after promoters added the group. Fan websites pointed to published interviews in which Simmons spoke about his suspicions that Jackson, who was acquitted of child molestation in 2005, was a pedophile.
The executors of the Michael Jackson estate also spoke out late Monday, sending a letter to the promoters saying they were "especially disappointed" by the announcement that KISS was in the show. The estate asked promoters to provide an explanation.
Jackson's kids excited about tribute Murray defense: Put Jackson on trial?
"As I am sure you are aware, Mr. Simmons has made numerous disparaging public comments about Michael Jackson after his passing," estate lawyer Howard Weitzman wrote in the letter obtained by CNN. He called media coverage of the controversy "extraordinarily embarrassing."
The estate, which has not sanctioned the event, also questioned the promoters' promise to share profits with charities and a provision in the terms of the ticket sale that so long as 50% of the billed acts show up there would be no refunds,.
"It is a concern to us that loyal Michael Jackson fans will pay for tickets and not receive full benefit for their purchase, nor will they be able to get a full refund if certain artists they paid to see cancel their participation," the letter said.
The promoters replied Tuesday morning.
"Under the circumstances we fully agree that even though KISS is a band Michael admired, we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert," Hunt said.
Promoters, who had hoped the addition of the legendary group would bolster their lineup, said they were unaware of Simmons' statements when they booked KISS for the show.
"We offer our sincerest apologies to Mrs. Jackson and the family for this oversight. Our primary concern must be to do justice to Michael's memory, and to put on a tribute that the family and the fans will find suitable and fit for a King, our King of Pop," Hunt said.
Simmons' comments were well-known among many Jackson fans. Fan websites quickly posted scathing objections after Monday's announcement.
"In the days following Michael Jackson's death, Gene Simmons has made slanderous, derogatory comments about Michael and his children," the fan site United For Michael Jackson's Legacy said. "It is quite ironic that Simmons has now agreed to himself pay tribute to the man he called a child predator."
The fan website MJ4Justice was one of several calling for a boycott of the show.
"Either they don't have access to computers, telephones or do not know how to use GOOGLE," MJ4Justice said in an online statement. "But, There is NO excuse for the Tribute organizers NOT to know Gene Simmons should not be part of any Michael Jackson Tribute Event."
Global Live Events executives appeared with Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson on CNN Monday to announce the signing of KISS.
"I know he would be very excited about KISS," Michael Jackson's mother said.
But within minutes, their tribute's Facebook page was filled with negative fan reactions.
"This is a complete disgrace," wrote one fan. "You can kiss your audience goodbye folks. I doubt whether any self-respecting fan will pay a penny to see that man after the comments he made about Michael. I'm shocked this act was even considered."
The KISS controversy overshadowed other announcements that promoters expected would gain fan support for their show, including word that many of the musicians who played in Jackson's touring band for the past two decades would reunite as the show's house band.
Kevin Dorsey, who served as musical director for several Michael Jackson tours, will direct the show.
Other acts signed for the show include Christina Aguilera, Leona Lewis, Smokey Robinson, Cee Lo Green and JLS. Alternative rock band Alien Ant Farm and British R&B singer Craig David are also on the bill.
Members of the Jackson family set to take the stage include "the next generation of Jacksons" and 3T, which consists of Tito Jackson's three sons, the promoters said.
It is also expected that one or more of the three Jackson sisters -- Janet, La Toya and Rebe -- will perform.
It appeared unlikely the tribute stage would be the scene for a reunion for the surviving members of the Jackson 5. While Jackie, Tito and Marlon support the concert, brothers Jermaine and Randy have publicly objected to the show being held at the same time as the trial for Michael Jackson's doctor.
"While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death," Jermaine and Randy Jackson said in a joint statement last month.
Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to continue through October.
"The trial is very important and I can understand how Randy and Jermaine feel, but it's been two years," Katherine Jackson told CNN Monday. "I thought it was a good idea; I'd like to keep Michael's legacy alive."
Katherine Jackson plans to attend the trial, although she will miss some days to fly to Wales to attend the show with Michael Jackson's children, she said.
"It will be on a Saturday when the courtroom is dark," said Paul Ring, a Global Live Events executive.
Fans can get tickets through a two-step process. They must first "register their interest for tickets" online at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] A lottery then will decide which fans will be e-mailed invitations to complete the ticket purchase.
The concert in the Wales Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, which seats 75,000 people, will be at least four hours long, Global Live Events CEO Chris Hunt said.

Michael Jackson Concert Drops Kiss From Line-Up

Organisers of the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Wales have dropped rock band Kiss from the line-up. The news comes after Jackson's estate threatening the promoters with legal action, claiming those behind the event in Wales were taking advantage of the singer's name and expressing their displeasure at the concert line-up, reports the Associated Press.
Howard Weitzman, the lawyer of the Estate, sent a letter to the promoters highlighting concerns that Gene Simmons group had been booked to play at the concert to be held at the Millennium Stadium. The band's bassist allegedly accused Jackson of being a child molester. In his letter, Weitzman wrote, "It was extraordinarily embarrassing when no sooner than you announced this 'news' that he would participate in your concert that Tmz posted an item noting that Mr. Simmons called Michael Jackson - the man you are purportedly honoring - a child molester". Global Events Live Ceo Chris Hunt accepted the blame and dropped Kiss from the line-up on Tuesday (16th August 2011), calling the booking an "oversight". Jackson was acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005 after a hugely-publicised trial that lasted five months.
The 'Michael Jackson Tribute Concert', taking place on 8th October, will be headlined by Christina Aguilera. Other acts set to perform include Michael's close friend Smokey Robinson, British songstress Leona Lewis, Cee-lo Green and boy-band JLS.

JERMAINE JACKSON
MJ Tribute Promoters
Are Using My Mom

Jermaine Jackson believes the promoters of the Michael Jackson Tribute Concert are crassly taking advantage of an 81-year-old woman -- otherwise known as Katherine Jackson -- to "prop up its event."

Jermaine just went on a Twitter rant, claiming Global Live is using his mom. And, he's particularly pissed at Global Live for its initial decision to have KISS perform, given that Gene Simmons has publicly accused MJ of being a hardcore child molester.

Jermaine tweeted, "I'm appalled as all fans that Global Live booked an artist like KISS after all Gene Simmons had said about Michael. It doesn't matter KISS' invitation is revoked. This mishandling reinforces my view that this promoter is getting it all wrong..."

Open Letter On Behalf of Michael Jackson Fans to Global Live Events
Open Letter on Behalf of Michael Jackson fans:

Paul Ring
Global Live Events
1630 Bristol Street
B1
Santa Monica, CA 90404
Email: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Dear Messrs. Hunt and Ring:

We, as Michael Jackson's staunch supporters and advocates, refuse to support the Michael Forever Tribute, planned by Global Live Events in October, 2011. Even with the withdrawal of your most recent performer, Gene Simmons, fans feel the damage has already been done. Your apology is too little, too late and does not solve the problems we have with this tribute.

Since the initial announcement, through fan sites and forums and a Facebook page (Fans Against Michael Forever Tribute) fans have voiced their concerns about this tribute. One of the initial concerns was how fans were treated on the Michael Forever Tribute Facebook page. The administrators were rude and deleted comments. Therefore, when the announcement was made that Global Live Events "listened to fans" regarding the addition of Simmons, many fans are doubtful. Fans believe that Global Live Events, in an attempt to qualm the media and the Estate, rescinded their offer to Simmons. Simply put, it is not the fans that Global Live Events is concerned with, but negative media coverage, which in turn affects ticket sales.

From the timing of this tribute, in the middle of Dr. Murray's trial, to the ticketing prices, to the obscurity over what charities will be receiving the donation, to the no-guarantee policy of performers, the addition of Gene Simmons and dishonoring, thus tarnishing Michael Jackson's legacy was simply the last straw. With the damage done, it will be the fans who work hard to overcome this debacle for Michael Jackson's legacy. Please understand that this tribute is doomed to fail now. Attorneys for the Michael Jackson Estate have written to you about their concerns, and now the Michael Jackson fan base has done the same. Do the right thing for Michael Jackson, and cancel this tribute.

Sincerely,

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

... Via Satellite

Beyonce just joined the growing list of A-listers performing at the upcoming MJ Tribute Concert in Wales -- but unlike the rest of the line-up ... she'll only be a glimmer of her former self.

Promoters behind the "Michael Forever Tribute" in October just posted the announcement to their Facebook page -- Bey will perform one of her favorite Jackson 5 songs ... via satellite.

Sadly, Beyonce couldn't perform live due to scheduling issues -- but this is almost the same, right? Right?

Jackson Concert Organizers Cite Sour Grapes, Misinformation in Opposition

As preparations continue for the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute concert, the show's organizers have been forced to go on the defensive after numerous Jackson fan clubs and two of the singer's brothers have publicly condemned the tribute.

Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert, set to take place October 8 in Wales' 75,000-capacity Millennium Stadium, will feature performances by Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Smokey Robinson and Ne-Yo, though its proximity to the September 20 manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray has troubled some of Jackson's fans and family.

MJ Fan Clubs Demand Tribute Concert Cancellation

"Staging the concert during his manslaughter trial isn't the right time," Gary Taylor, owner of the 80,000-member Jackson fan club MJJ Community, tells Billboard.com. "The fans are going to hear and see things that will be very hard to handle emotionally. The last thing they want to do is celebrate tribute-style to MJ. We're not saying to cancel it completely, but we will not support this concert one bit unless it's moved outside of the Murray trial. Otherwise, the concert will just have a load of Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo fans."

Taylor's group recently spearheaded an open letter speaking out against the concert signed by 35 Jackson fan clubs around the world.

Last month, Jackson's brothers Jermaine and Randy issued a statement denouncing the event, stating, in part, "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death."

Chris Hunt, President of Global Live Events, the UK-based production company organizing the concert, told Billboard.com that misinformation and ulterior motives were driving much of the protests. "I don't give a lot of credence to the 'It's disrespectful to do this during a trial' argument," Hunt tells us. "I like Jermaine and hope that he participates, but he also tried to set something up like this on two occasions and didn't succeed. You wonder if there's some of that in the back of his mind as well. I don't think there's any inappropriateness about having the concert three weeks after the trial may or may not start. What is wrong with a celebration of a great man's life at such a time?"

Many of Jackson's family have agreed to participate in the concert, either as performers or producers of the show. In a joint statement to Billboard, Jackson's brothers Jackie, Marlon and Tito said, "When we were approached to do this show, we thought it was important for us to say yes as our mother has endorsed this event and we wanted to support her with this tribute to our brother Michael. We feel this tribute would be something Michael would be proud of. I know our mother is thrilled that we are able to share this special event with her as well as all of Michael's fans. We look forward to seeing you all there."

While Global Live did not require the Jackson estate's permission to stage the upcoming concert in the UK, Howard Weitzman, an attorney representing the estate, issued a strongly worded letter to the company earlier this month. The letter outlined "multiple concerns" about the concert, including questions about the event's charitable donations and a clause in the ticket's Terms and Conditions stating "If 50% or more of the number of contracted artistes attend and perform the concert will take place and no refunds will be offered."

"How can you have a concert where you put in small print, 'We can't be responsible for artists not turning up'?," Taylor says. "What sort of concert is that? These people are clueless."

KISS Removed from Michael Jackson Tribute Concert Lineup

Concertgoers are encouraged to add on to the ticket's cost for charitable donations, though Hunt states that a "significant amount" of the proceeds, regardless of ticket buyers' contributions, will go to AIDS Project Los Angeles and UK youth charity The Prince's Trust. Organizers are also setting up a trust fund for Jackson's children in excess of $100,000 with Jackson's mother Katherine as trustee.

A number of fan clubs -- and posters on Facebook -- have erroneously disseminated news that invited artists will perform their own songs, a point Hunt vehemently denied. "All the songs in the tribute are Michael Jackson's either from The Jackson 5, The Jacksons era or his solo career," Hunt says. "Every one. Period."

Tickets for the concert, ranging in price from 55 to 240 pounds ($90-360), went on sale Wednesday. The concert is scheduled to be broadcast around the world on paid television channels.

APNewsBreak: Janet Jackson won't attend tribute

By ANTHONY McCARTNEY, AP Entertainment Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Janet Jackson said Monday she won't attend a planned tribute concert for her older brother Michael in Wales because the show coincides with the trial of a doctor charged in the King of Pop's death.
The singer's one-sentence statement to The Associated Press does not criticize the show, as her brothers Jermaine and Randy have done, but cites the court case as her reason for not attending.
"Because of the trial, the timing of this tribute to our brother would be too difficult for me," her statement reads.
Her statement was released on what would have been her brother's 53rd birthday.
Organizers of "Michael Forever — The Tribute Concert" have struggled to line up top-name acts and have been criticized by fans and the late singer's estate for multiple reasons, including its costly tickets, timing and remote location.
The show is scheduled for Oct. 8 in Cardiff, Wales, and the singer's mother, Katherine, and some of her children are scheduled to attend.
Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, and Cee Lo Green are the top-names listed as performers so far. Organizers had to rescind an offer to the band Kiss after fans and Michael Jackson's estate noted that singer-bassist Gene Simmons had harshly criticized the pop singer over the years.
Opening statements in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray are scheduled to begin on Sept. 27. Murray, who has pleaded not guilty, could face up to four years in prison if convicted.
Authorities allege he gave Michael Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the bedroom of his rented mansion on June 25, 2009.

MJ TRIBUTE CONCERT
Peace Treaty Offered to Angry Fans

The people behind the upcoming Michael Jackson tribute concert want to make peace with the fans who have sworn to boycott the event ... by inviting them all to join in on a conference call to air out their grievances.

TMZ spoke to a rep for the concert who says they're inviting the leaders of several prominent fan groups to join them Wednesday for "an informative call to address some of the misinformation about the upcoming Michael Forever tribute."

For those unfamiliar, a TON of MJ fan groups banded together in anger -- after Jermaine and Randy Jackson claimed it would be "inappropriate" to support a concert "during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death."

We're told event organizers are hoping the call with put "rumors and incorrect information to rest."

Stay tuned ...

Janet, Jermaine and Randy against Wales tribute to Michael Jackson
WITH BILL ZWECKER August 29, 2011 7:32PM

The Jackson family conflicts continue over the big Oct. 8 tribute concert in Wales honoring Michael Jackson.

In a statement released Monday, Janet Jackson lined up with brothers Jermaine and Randy saying she could not support — or participate in — the concert due to its taking place during the upcoming manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who the Jacksons largely blame for Michael’s death.

While the Murray trial is slated to begin Sept. 27, a good Jackson family source tells me this is just an excuse for Jermaine, Randy and Janet to spurn the event.

“It drives Jermaine nuts that he twice failed to get a tribute concert organized, and now these guys in Wales are pulling it off and will make a ton of dough,” mainly due to the big international pay-for-view TV deal they inked.

Already committed to perform Jackson’s music in Wales are Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Smokey Robinson, Ne-Yo and possibly mama-to-be Beyonce.

Family matriarch Katherine Jackson supports the tribute concert, organized by several of her other children. Michael’s own kids, who were just in Gary this past weekend, also have said they hope to attend the Oct. 8 event.

STAGE SET: The honorees at this year’s Sarah Siddons Society gala will be John O’Hurley, dubbed “Chicago’s Actor for All Seasons,” and veteran local actress E. Faye Butler, being toasted as “Chicago’s Leading Lady.”

The awards — Chicago’s oldest honors for theater luminaries — will be presented at a Ritz-Carlton Hotel fete on Oct. 10.

ALL ABOUT ALGREN: Rocker Billy Corgan has volunteered to write the Chicago theme music for the upcoming Michael Caplan film about Nelson Algren — featuring some 200 of Corgan pal Art Shay’s Algren photos as backgrounds.

Recently Caplan, associate chair of film and video at Columbia College, filmed Shay, his wife Florence and Corgan on their memories of Algren in Florence’s Highland Park book shop, Titles.

Corgan recalled a tough Chicago neighborhood where he, as young as age 4, was taken to bars where he was “surrounded by Algren’s Division Street characters.”

Others included in the documentary are filmmakers Philip Kaufman and John Sayles, rocker Wayne Kramer and writers Barry Gifford, Jan Herman and Bruce Jay Friedman.

THE SICK BAY: Get-well wishes go out to leading Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra, who appeared July 30 at Ravinia in “Tosca” and is considered artistic heir to the late Luciano Pavarotti. Licitra is in serious condition with head injuries after a motor scooter crash Saturday near Ragusa, on the Italian island of Sicily.

Licitra is scheduled to sing Radames in Verdi’s “Aida” in March at the Lyric Opera.

ITALIAN A LA RANCIC: Guiliana and Bill Rancic have lined up an illustrious chef for the Italian eatery they’ll open here in January.

The as-yet-unnamed restaurant will feature the culinary stylings of chef Doug Psaltis, an alum of food gurus Alain Ducasse’s and Thomas Keller’s kitchens. RJ, Jerrod and Molly Melman are working with the Style Network stars on the place, headed for the site of dad Rich Melman’s former Ben Pao.

A SPECIAL GARDEN: It is bound to be an emotional ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday as Progress Printing’s Darr and Nina Gapshis join the friends of their late, beloved brother, philanthropist Martin Gapshis, at the dedication of the garden in his memory at the Center on Halsted. The date marks the one-year anniversary of the unexpected death of Martin, one of the center’s most enthusiastic and generous supporters.

SEEN ON THE SCENE: Barbra Streisand skipped a busy Saturday at Le Colonial on Rush and booked a private table for the quieter Sunday, but it made little difference. Under her big black hat, no one recognized her! The legendary diva loved the eatery’s barbecue pork so much — she asked for an extra order to go. … “Bachelorette” duo Trista and Ryan Sutter were spied at Park Grill in Millennium Park. … New Chicagoan Dan Gargan — the starting midfielder/defender for the Chicago Fire — dined at Viaggio Ristorante on West Madison the other night. … One thing about Mayor Rahm “Triathalete” Emanuel, the guy has yet to be seen “pigging out” in public. A good example: His lunching at Fulton’s on the River — another heart-healthy meal of grilled chicken and roasted veggies. … Clyde “the Glide” Drexler was seen enjoying the Dover sole at Chicago Cut.

Bill Zwecker reports on “Good Day Chicago” and “Fox Chicago News at 9” on WFLD-Channel 32.

Beyonce Cancels Appearance in Michael Jackson Tribute Concert

The star-studded roster for the Michael Jackson tribute concert in Cardiff, Wales next month was shaken up after news broke that Beyonce will no longer perform via life satellite. She will, however make “a special contribution on video” according to the Ticketmaster website. Several Jacksons won’t be in attendance either due to the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray.

A source confirmed the news to RadarOnline: ”Beyonce won’t be performing a song live via satellite for the tribute concert now.” The October 8 concert also won’t have Michael’s siblings Janet, Randy and Jermaine in attendance due to the doctor’s trial.

OK! NEWS: BEYONCE CAN’T WAIT TO FINALLY BE A MOM!

That said, Katherine Jackson indicated she will indeed attend the concert and Michael’s kids will attend it as well! Showing her support for the show, Michael’s sister LaToya will watch it in Wales, too.

OK! NEWS: KANYE WEST WANTS TO BE GODFATHER OF BEYONCE AND JAY-Z’S BABY

Other performances on the schedule include Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Leona Lewis and Ne-Yo. Apparently that may not satisfy Michael Jackson fans who were annoyed promoters are offering two for one deal on tickets, especially to fans who already paid full price for their seat. The concert promoter didn’t immediately respond to RadarOnline’s request to comment on the story.

Beyonce Pulls Out Of Live Satellite Performance At Michael Jackson Tribute Concert

WENN
By Jen Heger - Radar Legal Editor

The Michael Jackson Tribute concert in Cardiff, Wales, will not be featuring a live satellite performance by Beyonce as originally promised, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

Concert promoters had earlier stated that the pregnant singer would be performing via satellite, but on the Ticketmaster website for the event, Beyonce is now listed as making "a special contribution on video."

"Beyonce won't be performing a song live via satellite for the tribute concert now," a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com exclusively.

PHOTOS: Michael Jackson Through The Years

The tribute concert also won't be attended by Janet, Randy or Jermaine Jackson because the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who is charged in the death of Michael, will be going on at the same time.

However, Katherine Jackson has said she will attend the concert, along with Michael's children, and LaToya fully supports the show and will also be there.

Creating more controversy, Michael Jackson fans are outraged that promoters are now offering 2-for-1 deals for tickets.

Fans that already bought tickets for the October 8 show at the 75,000 seat arena, won’t qualify for the deal.

Performers slated to perform are Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Leona Lewis, and Ne-Yo.

Ticket prices range from $55-450 with a service and processing fee of $20.

Concert promoter Global Live Events didn't immediately respond to request for comment on the story.

A rep for Beyonce tells RadarOnline.com: “We never announced or confirmed Beyonce's participation, various media outlets announced her performing by satellite not us and we never confirmed that.

“Beyonce was always scheduled via a special video performance and message to Michael, family and fans. It is a spectacular performance!

Michael Jackson Fans Upset Over Slashed Ticket Prices for Tribute ConcertSeats for show in Wales are being heavily discounted

Michael Jackson fans are furious over reports that promoters of the Michael Forever tribute concert in Wales have slashed ticket prices and offered two-for-one deals in order to combat slow ticket sales for the event. Fans in a Facebook group called Fans Against Michael Forever Tribute posted a link to the promotion, noting that the discount would not apply to tickets already purchased for the October 8th show.

In addition to feeling ripped off by this new ticket promotion, fans were also angered by the clarification that Beyoncé's involvement will be limited to a pre-taped segment rather than a live performance via satellite, as previously promised.

This is only the latest setback for the Michael Forever Tribute. The show has been denied authorization by the singer's estate, rejected by his siblings Janet, Tito and Jermaine, and was forced to drop Kiss as a headliner when organizers were criticized for condoning bassist Gene Simmons' inflammatory comments about the King of Pop's alleged child molestation. Last month, a coalition of 35 Michael Jackson fan clubs from around the world came together to call for the cancellation of the show, which is set to include performances by Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson and Cee Lo Green.

La Toya to sing at Jackson tribute
(UKPA) –

Michael Jackson's sister La Toya will come out of retirement to perform at a tribute concert for her brother in Wales next month.
The singer has not performed a full live set for almost 20 years, but will play alongside stars including Gladys Knight, The Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on October 8.
The Jackson Brothers, Tito, Marlon and Jackie, will also perform, and Beyonce will appear via a satellite video link.
La Toya said: "I have put musical performance behind me for roughly two decades. But there will never be another magical moment such as this to celebrate Michael with his fans to perpetuate the importance of his legacy.
"I am honoured to share the stage with the incredible performers in this line-up, and am certain that nothing would make my brother smile bigger or brighter than this tribute concert."
She continued: "In speaking with my mother yesterday, I asked her where she thinks Michael would rather have us be - in this courtroom filled with negativity and lies, or on a stage celebrating his music, his legacy and his life.
"And she said without a second of thought: 'Celebrating his life with family and fans.'
"I am looking forward to putting on a great show and making my brother proud."

Michael Jackson concert: La Toya to perform in Cardiff

Michael Jackson's sister La Toya is to step out of retirement after 20 years to perform at the Cardiff tribute concert in his name next month.

Ms Jackson is the latest act to be added to the bill for the Michael Forever concert at the Millennium Stadium on 8 October.

She said: "There will never be another magical moment such as this to celebrate Michael with his fans."

The Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will also perform.

The concert has been surrounded with controversy since it was announced in July.

I looking forward to putting on a great show and making my brother proud”

It was launched with the support of the singer's mother Katherine and brothers Tito, Marlon and Jackie.

However, Jermaine and Randy Jackson said it should not go ahead because it would clash with the trial of Conrad Murray, the singer's former doctor accused of his involuntary manslaughter.

Another of Michael's sisters, Janet Jackson, has also said she will not attend as the timing was "too difficult".

'Celebrating'
La Toya Jackson revealed she had spoken to her mother about her involvement in the event.

Ms Jackson said she asked her mother whether she thought Michael would rather his family be in court, or performing on stage.

Michael Jackson died while rehearsing for his This Is It tour
"She said without a second of thought: 'Celebrating his life with family and fans.' I am looking forward to putting on a great show and making my brother proud," she added.

Ms Jackson added nothing would make her brother "smile bigger or brighter" than the tribute concert.

The show will be co-hosted by BBC Radio 1 presenter Fearne Cotton and Hollywood actor and singer Jamie Foxx.

Gladys Knight, Alien Ant Farm, Jackson brothers Tito, Marlon and Jackie, Alexandra Burke, JLS, Pixie Lott, Diversity, and 3T will appear at the concert, while Beyonce will perform via satellite, said promoters Global Live Events.

During her singing career La Toya Jackson performed in more than 90 countries. Her chart releases include Heart Don't Lie and Just Wanna Dance.

The Black Eyed Peas pull out of Michael Jackson tribute concert just days before the show
By ALANAH ERIKSEN

The Michael Jackson concert has already been overshadowed by a court case, low ticket sales and copyright issues.
But now major act the Black Eyed Peas have pulled out of the show, just days before it kicks off in Cardiff on Saturday.

The chart-topping R&B group were one of the biggest names on the bill for the event which also includes Christina Aguilera, Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Leona Lewis, Ne-Yo, Usher and JLS.
Jamie Fox will co-host the event with Fearne Cotton.

The group cited 'unavoidable circumstances' as its reason for pulling out.
Chris Hunt, chief executive of Global Live Events which is staging the show, said: 'It is with regret that we announce the removal of Black Eyed Peas from the Michael Forever bill, but I look forward to a great night with other earth-shattering artists.

'The event is really getting into gear and is going to be a fantastic evening for all.'
The promoters of The Michael Forever Tribute Concert had already pulled Gene Simmons and KISS from the lineup because of comments he made about the superstar.

He was quoted as saying: 'Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. There’s no question in my mind [Jackson] molested those kids. Not a doubt.'

Katherine Jackson has announced "Michael Forever The Tribute Concert." Article-2045706-0E0F76AA00000578-692_468x481

The promoters said: 'We have listened to Michael’s fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons.
'Under the circumstances we fully agree that even though KISS is a band Michael admired we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert.'

It has reportedly taken two years and at least three failed attempts by others, including Michael's brother Jermaine, to get a tribute off the ground.
The celebrations conflict with the ongoing trial in LA of Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, who is accused of the King of Pop's involuntary manslaughter.

Controversial: Gene Simmons was pulled from the concert after he said he thought Michael molested children
The Millennium Stadium has a 74,000 capacity but has not sold out, although promoters have not revealed ticket sales.
The concert will also be the first global pay-per-view live broadcast on Facebook, with a potential audience of 800million.

However it currently boasts only 10,000 'likes' on its own Facebook page.
There also won’t be any video footage or musical excerpts featuring Jackson himself at the concert, for copyright reasons.

Meanwhile, producers of a documentary, Michael Jackson: The Life Of An Icon, have announced the film will be given its world premiere in London next month.
The film, backed by Jackson's friend David Gest, will be screened at the Empire Leicester Square cinema on November 2 - two days after it comes out on DVD.
The late singer's mother Katherine, brother Tito and sister Rebbie will attend.

Michael Jackson Tribute Concert Promoter Denies Rumors of Fallout With Jackson Estate

Chris Hunt of Global Live Events says Saturday's show will go one despite the Black Eyed Peas last-minute exit from the lineup.
As the trial of Conrad Murray, the late Michael Jackson’s doctor, rages on, the promoters of the Michael Jackson tribute concert that is set to take place this Saturday are dealing with last minute troubles and squashing rampant rumors.

Chris Hunt, head of Global Live Events, which is putting on the “Michael Forever” event in Cardiff, said there have been challenges, but many of the rumors are untrue.

"I've never been in a situation in my entire career like it where so many false rumors emerged as if from nowhere," Hunt told Reuters.
Hunt denied that there has been any fallout with Jackson's estate.
Even if there aren’t problems with the Jackson’s estate, there have been plenty of hiccups along the long road to the event.
Of the Jackson family, Tito, Marlon, Jackie and La Toya are set to attend, but brothers Jermaine and Randy, along with Janet Jackson, have decided not to attend because the event coincides with the ongoing involuntary manslaughter trial against.

VIDEOS: MTV: 30 Years of Videos
"A couple of them decided they didn't want to do it and they cited a reason which, to my mind, and indeed to most of the rest of the family, has no logic to it whatever,” said Hunt.

The concert promoters received criticism from some fans about the event, which will take place at the Millennium Stadium, being at the same time as the trial.

On top of that, the Black Eyed Peas, who were set to perform with Christina Aguilera, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Leona Lewis and Cee Lo Green, pulled out of the line-up this week, citing "unavoidable circumstances."
For those who can’t make it to Wales, the concert will be streaming live on Facebook, and fans can pay for access.
